Private stamps

Several persons issued stamps to be used for their own local mail services. All these stamps are very rare.

Burdell's Express (1854-55)

Stamps were issued, but they must be rare.

The only information about this company I could find was found in an extract from the First Age newspaper, October 17, 1854 (found at http://www.brandis.com.au/):

" BURDELL & CO'S British and Australian Express, 99, Collins Street, opposite the Western Market, for Booking, Forwarding, and Delivering, as addressed, Gold Dust, Specie, Bankers', Solititors', and other valuable Packages, Parcels, and Merchandise, by Steamers, viz,- To Geelong, be every Steamer, in charge of a Special Messanger.

The value of all packages are covered by Insurance when desired, and are delivered by our agents immediately on arrival. Larger packages will be called for by our drays which run regularly to each Steamer. Principal Offices - Melbourne, 99 Great Collins Street, opposite the Western Market.
Geelong, Moorabool Street, Sydney, George Street, Mr Robert Campbell, Manager.

England, Ireland, and Scotland, Peel, Brothers, and Co., Liverpool, and Pickford and Co.
Money orders and drafts for all sums from 5 pounds upwards, payable by the Provincial bank of Ireland, the National bank of Scotland, or any of their branches, or in London.

According to http://www.ozrevenues.com/Revenue-Railway-Local-Perfin-Catalogue/locals.htm, four types of these stamps exist:
Type I: 'S' of 'BRITISH' under left side of 'D' in 'BURDELL'. Broken 'g' in 'Packages'.
Type II: 'S' of 'BRITISH' under right side of 'D' in 'BURDELL'.
Type III: Smaller capital 'A' in 'Adelaide'. 'Du' and 'st' of 'Dust' are not aligned.
Type IV: Comma after Ireland.

Murray Steam Navigation Co. (1864)

The text on these stamps reads: 'VICTORIA MURRAY S.N.Co. N.S.WALES'. A picture of a ship near a beach with palm trees has been chosen as the design for these stamps. I have seen the values 1/2 p black, 1 p red, 2 p blue and 3 p green.

If I'm well informed no more than 24 sets of these stamps are known to exist. According to http://www.ozrevenues.com/Revenue-Railway-Local-Perfin-Catalogue/locals.htm the 1/2 p exists with 'HALF PENNY' or 'HALF PENCE'.

McCulloch's Parcel Stamps (1860?-1880)

Some other extremely rare labels (possibly unique) of this company (images obtained from www.premierphilately.com/ ) :

The Adelaide branch of this company was taken over by Combe, Green & Co. For more Australia Parcel stamps, click here.

Boyd's City Messenger Service (1894)

Barred Numeral cancels

Barred numeral cancels were introduced in 1856 and replaced the barred oval cancels.

1 p green 4 p red 4 p red

This type of cancel was used from 1856 to 1906. The numbers '1' to '2100' were used. There appears not to have been a consistent type for each number. Some numbers even exist in several sub-types.
