Erasmo Oneglia was an Italian forger in the late 19th century.
He is famous for his engraved forgeries, but he also made
photo-lithographed forgeries. Many of his forgeries were
previously attributed to the forger Angelo
Panelli. The engraved Oneglia forgeries are usually
'overinked'.
His forgeries include stamps from the Australian States, Baden, Belgium, Belgian Congo, Brazil, British North America, British West Indies, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Verde, Ceylon, Chile, France, Greece, Hong Kong, Italian States, Luxemburg, Malayan States, Malta, Monaco, Nevis, Portuguese Guinea, St. Helena, Spain, Switzerland, Roman States, Thailand, Tuscany, Two Sicilies, United States and Confederate States of America. Some of his forgeries were erroneously attributed to Angelo Panelli. According to the book The Oneglia Engraved Forgeries Commonly Attributed to Angelo Panelli by Robson Lowe and Carl Walske (1997) 788 forgeries were made from 30 countries by Oneglia.
Possible Oneglia forgeries of the Queen Victoria issue of Natal.
First issue. See Cd#2.
(New Brunswick 6 p yellow and 1 Sh violet forgery)
These forgeries were often attributed to Panelli, since Panelli sold them. But they were actually made by Oneglia.
A whole sheet of Oneglia forgeries of Newfoundland, printed in rows of 6, all six values below each other:
(Reduced sizes)
Forgeries of New South Wales. Made by Panelli
or Oneglia? A similar forgery (same facial expression) of the 2 p
value can be found in Philatelic Forgers, Their Lives and Works
by V.E.Tyler in which it is attributed to Angelo Panelli.
Forgery of the 5 c on 8 c green stamp, the surcharge (too broad)
and cancel are forged. The right hand side Chinese characters and
the left hand side Arabic inscriptions are those of the 2 c value
and not of the 8 c value! I've also seen this forgery without the
'5 CENTS' surcharge. It might have been made by the forger
Oneglia, since I've seen it offered in a batch with many Oneglia
forgeries.
(image obtained from Richard Frajola)
These Saxony forgeries might have been made by Oneglia, since
they are often offered with batches of Panelli/Oneglia forgeries
on from an Ebay seller 'Esterrana' (Milan, Italy) in (2009)
These forgeries are often attibuted to the forger Panelli.
Oneglia also forged surcharged stamps, and overprints such as the above 'PERAK' overprint.
Besides, brown, red and blue, I've also seen this forgery in the
color grey.
Oneglia also made a forgery of the 90 c 1869 issue.
Two 90 c 1869 forgeries
I've seen the 1 p forgery in orange color and the 2 p forgery in
light brown as well.
An engraved forgery of the 1 Sh Virgin Islands stamp, most likely
an Oneglia product....
