The Federated Maly States consists of the following states: Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Selangor and Sungei Ujong.

A '4 CENTS' on 3 c was prepared in 1918 but never placed into use. The whole stock (except a few stamps) was destroyed.

Fiscal stamps, overprinted 'Judicial':

The following values exist with this 'Judicial' overprint: 3 c brown (red overprint), 5 c red and green on yellow (red overprint), 10 c lilac and black (red overprint), 20 c black and lilac (red overprint), 25 c on 50 c orange and black and 50 c orange and black (red overprint).
The values 10 c lilac and black and 50 c orange and black exist with a fiscal 'J' overprint (in red on the 10 c) applied in 1901.
The overprint 'JUDICIAL' was applied to the value 5 c red and green on yellow in 1906.

Postal stationary in the same design was also issued: 1 c green, 2 c green, 3 c red, 4 c red and 4 c orange. All of them are postcards except the 4 c orange which is a letter card. Furthermore the surcharges '2 CENTS' on 1 c green and '4 CENTS' on 3 c red exist. A newspaper wrapper 2 c green also exists.

In this 'REGISTRATION' design the values 5 c blue, 10 c blue and 12 c blue exist.

Forged Japanese occupation overprints have appeared from a seller from Florida on Ebay; see http://www.geocities.com/cjyuan00/gallery/fake.htm for more information. They can easily be recongnized since the above stamps were never overprinted during the Japanese occupation.

The values 1 $ dark green and light green, 2 $ green and red, 5 $ green and blue and 25 $ exist with 'JUDICIAL' overprint in red, they are fiscal stamps issued in 1901.

Similar stamps as above exist with inscription 'REVENUE' at both sides. They were issued in 1904 in the values 100 $ violet and red and 250 $ violet and blue, example:

1946 Victory issue, identical to sets issued in many other British colonies, inscription '8th JUNE 1946' (for stamps in a similar design, but for another British colony, click here): a 8 c red was prepared, but never issued (RR).

 

Postage Due stamps


4 c postage due stamp of 1924 with inscriptio 'POSTAGE DUE FEDERATED MALAY STATES'

The first postage due stamps for the Federated Malay States were issued in 1924 (inscription 'FEDERATED MALAY STATES POSTAGE DUE', 1 c violet, 2 c black, 4 c green, 8 c red, 10 c orange and 12 c blue).

A second postage due set followed in 1936 with inscription 'MALAYAN POSTAL UNION', values: 1 c violet, 1 c brown (1964), 2 c blue (1952), 3 c green (1945), 4 c green, 4 c brown (1965), 5 c red (1945), 8 c red, 8 c orange (1949), 10 c orange, 12 c blue, 12 c lilac (1954), 15 c blue (1945), 20 c blue (1948) and 50 c black. A '10 cents' on 8 c orange was issued in 1965.


With Japanese overprint

During the Japanes occupation, some stamps were overprinted with Japanese characters. I have seen 1 c violet, 3 c green, 4 c green, 5 c red, 9 c orange, 10 c orange, 12 c lilac and 15 c lilac.

I've also seen the values 4 c green, 10 c orange and 12 c lilac with overprint 'DAI NIPPON 2602 MALAYA' (also issued during the Japanese occupation).


Railway Stamps

Some railway stamps exist with inscription 'FEDERATED MALAY STATES RAILWAYS'. I have never seen these stamps.


Fiscal Stamps

Besides the already mentionned postage stamps with overprint 'Judicial', 'JUDICIAL' or 'J', there are also special stamps in the tiger design (as the postage stamps, but larger), but with inscription 'JUDICIAL' at the bottom. They were issued in 1900 and the following values exist: 3 c, 5 c, 10 c, 20 c, 25 c, 50 c, 1 $, 2 $, 3 $, 5 $ (two colours), 10 $ (two colours), 25 $ (3 colours) and 50 $.


Postal Stationery

Besides the already mentioned postcards, letter card and newspaper wrapper in the running tiger design (as the postage stamps), another design also exist with a tiger in an embossed oval. The envelopes 4 c orange and 6 c red exist as well as the registered envelope 15 c blue (inscription 'REGISTRATION FEE').



MALACCA (or Melaka)

Malacca issued its first stamps in 1948.

Stamps of Straits Settlements with red overprint 'DAI NIPPON 2602 PENANG'

I've seen a similar 5 c brown and 10 c lilac stamp (both small design) from Straits Settlements with a red 'DAI NIPPON 2602 PENANG' overprint. This stamp was issued during the Japanese occupation.

The first stamps of Malaysia (1957) had the inscription 'MALAYA' or 'PERSEKUTUAN TAHAN MELAYU' (see image above). From 1963 onwards the inscription was 'MALAYSIA'.

Stamps of Malaysia with inscription 'DENDA' are postage due stamps (first issued in 1966).
